For this weekend we are visiting the stunning Jurassic Coast (World Heritage Site) in Dorset, an ideal location for a summer weekend away. We will depart after work on Friday and make our way to Dorset (car sharing will be available for those that need it and options will be announced nearer the time – you are welcome to make your own way to the accommodation and the starting points, if you prefer). We have accommodation booked at YHA Lulworth Cove which is only a 3 hour drive from West London, meaning a decent arrival time on Friday evening.
Our accommodation is ideally located for our hikes over the weekend. The hostel is near the lovely, bustling Lulworth Cove. All bedding is provided and there are showers and toilets, a fully equipped self-catering kitchen (c/w fridges, freezer, oven, kettles, toasters, microwave, cutlery & crockery) a large dining room and a lounge plus a drying room.
On Saturday after breakfast we will have a short drive to Studland Bay – where our walk begins. The walk is approx 18km and is based around Old Harry Rocks. It starts in Studland Bay and then heads east towards Handfast Point – Old Harry Rocks. We then follow the coastal path south to Ballard Point before turning west inland along part of the Purbeck Way and then heading north through Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve and onto Studland Heath. We link up with the Poole Harbour Trail and around South Haven Point before heading south and back into Studland Bay. After the walk we will return to the accommodation for showers, and then most of the group are likely to eat their evening meal at a local pub which will be booked nearer the time – or you can self-cater at the hostel.
On Sunday after breakfast, we have 2 options, both based from our front door in Lulworth Cove:
Option 1: Kayak the World Heritage Jurassic coastline between Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door with expert guides from Lulworth Cove (an additional £60 supplement). Take in the natural wonders of this dramatic landscape from their safe and stable double sit on top kayaks and see Durdle Door in all its glory!
Option 2: For those who prefer to stay off the water – a short walk along the coast which closely passes the magnificent and famous Durdle Door (a Natural Arches and part of the Lulworth Estate and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site) providing stunning views and picture opportunities, plus meet the Kayaking group for lunch at Durdle Door.
Once we finish the activities we will depart back to London – you can expect to be back in London by about 7pm on Sunday evening.
